Warm weather, blossoming flowers and trees, green grass and no more snow means Spring is officially in full swing with summer not far behind! That means family photo session bookings are heating up too. A popular questions I get from clients is "What should we wear for our photo session?"
I've put together a board on my Pinterest page to give you some great examples. That's not to say you should go out and buy these outfits, but it gives you a general starting point. You can find the "what to wear" Pinterest page **here**.
But first, let's look at some great rules of thumb...
1. BE COMFORTABLE
If you can't comfortably bend or sit down, you should probably change your outfit. Pick something that makes you feel fantastic! You want to be absolutely sure that you will be happy with how you look in your photos. The last thing we want is for you to not like your photos because of your clothing choice.
2. BE YOURSELF
Choose an outfit that reflects who you are. You should choose something that you would normally wear, whether that's a shopping day, lunch with friends, or an evening out. This is exactly why you shouldn't even need to go out and buy new clothes for everybody!
3. DON'T BE CLONES - COORDINATE
This one is just personal preference, but very important in my opinion. When I photograph families, I want them to feel very natural. If you all have on white shirts and khakis it screams "we planned these photos." You all have individual personalities so let's show them off! So coordinate your outfits instead of all looking identical.
4. POP OF COLOR
Most outdoor photo sessions include an abundance of earth tones; green grass, green trees, brown tree trunks and blue skies. So, unless we happen to be on location at a spot with a lot of unique and awesome structure, one way to really make your photos truly stand out is to use color. You'll be like that one vibrant flower in a sea of green. Choosing bold colors as an accent will really make you stand out in your portraits.
5. DON'T BE TOO TRENDY
Things that may be "in style" now, might not be the in style in 5 or 10 years, much less 2 or 3! Some of the most popular products include the heirloom collections which are intended to be displayed in your home for years. You don't want to be looking at your beautiful portraits in a few years and say to yourself, "What was I thinking with that outfit?!"
My favorite! Add a blazer, hat, scarf or even a cute purse. Adding or removing these items from one location to the next can drastically change the look of your photos. Accessorizing provides you more options to choose from when selecting your favorite photos.
