Preparing for your Newborn Session
I know what you're thinking... "I have to prepare for my newborn session? I just had a baby; I can't do much of anything but taking care of my newborn and sleeping!"
No worries, friend! I mean, I don’t need you to have the dishes done, floors mopped, laundry put away and the baseboards dusted! It’s more of a mental preparation and a few minor things around the house. So let's get started!
I adore the natural setting of having a newborn session in the family’s home. It is the best way to document those first few days of "real life" with your new bundle of joy. I will come to your home for the newborn session and stay about 2 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, changing and snuggling! It also depends on baby’s comfort and cooperation.
PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION:
Ideally, is best to book your newborn session while still pregnant. While we don't lock in a date and time, I take note of your due date and make sure to keep a few open dates since we don't know when your little one will decide to make their arrival (unless you have a scheduled c-section). Newborn sessions are best photographed within the first 10 days of baby’s life. After we officially book your session, you will receive a contract and invoice via email. The contract will need to be electronically signed and the retainer fee (applied to invoice total) will need to be received within one week of booking your session.
Most photos taken will be candids with a bit of direction on my end. We'll capture you enjoying your new bundle with hugs, kisses and snuggles. We can also include props that you provide. Get anything you have that you want photographed out and ready all in one place. This could be a special hat, blanket, jewelry, handkerchief, etc. And if you don't have anything that you specifically want photographed, that's okay too.
Clothing: I prefer to photograph baby in a long sleeve white onesie or wrap. I love the simple, neutral look. Most newborn’s clothes tend to not fit properly, so keep that in mind when choosing his/her outfit. I will bring wraps, hats and head bands for your newborn. Make sure baby is already in their outfit when I arrive, we don't want to start off upsetting him by pulling on his arms and legs trying to get him undressed! Please make sure that your clothing is neutral colors as well; no bright colors or loud patterns. When picking out your own clothing, please dress comfortably. No need for dresses or fancy clothing. This is a natural session. T-Shirts, polos, sweaters, or tank tops are always okay. Just remember to keep your colors neutral and avoid bright colors and bold patterns.
Okay, so I do ask that the main areas of the home that we will be photographing in be at least semi clean. The living or family room, master bedroom, and nursery (if you have one) will be the areas we will be in. Try to declutter those areas as much as possible. Throw the dirty laundry in the closet or another room. Clear of the coffee table. See I told you, minor things!
THE DAY OF YOUR SESSION:
The most important thing to remember on the day of your session is to relax. Please, don't be stressed about me coming to your home. I am here to capture beautiful images of you and your newest family member. This is a time to be cherished and nothing to worry over. If your home isn't spotless, I don't care! Believe me, you should see my house!
I prefer to photograph newborns in the late morning. This allows your family enough time to wake up for the day and get yourselves ready. If this time does not work for you, we may schedule another time during day.
This is important...raise the temperature in your home. I know, you’re hot! I totally understand. However, that precious little one isn’t use to this chilly world just yet. We want him or her to be as comfortable as possible. Especially while being photographed since they won't be fully clothed with a hat on and swaddled like they likely will be when I leave! Bumping the temp to 75 degrees or higher will make a big difference in baby’s comfort level. If we aren’t sweating, baby probably isn’t warm enough.
Please try to keep baby awake as much as possible the morning I am coming. A sleeping baby is much more cooperative than an awake baby. This may mean walking around the house and not snuggling up for nap time. Dad, you take over for awhile so Mom can get ready. Try to time it out so that baby has just finished feeding when I arrive. His/Her sleep cycle typically starts immediately after eating and we want that to happen shortly after I arrive, not before. This will also work beautifully if baby is kept awake all morning. Plus, I want to capture a few shots while you’re soothing him/her to sleep. Simple, yet beautiful.
DURING YOUR SESSION:
After baby has full tummy, I will come and photograph you while you’re holding a now sleeping baby. Then, I will take him/her to do posed so posed portraits of them in their crib, on a fluffy rug, or the even your bed. While I typically only do a few of these, it can take some time. This is where I will get full body shots and focus on those adorable tiny newborn details.
After doing a few poses, we will begin the lifestyle session. These are typically photos of everyone. Mom, Dad, baby, siblings and even your furry babies. Try to remember to relax and be as natural as possible. Lot of kisses, snuggling and admiring. This newborn stage goes by so incredible fast, you’re going to want to remember forever.
If at any moment throughout the session your baby wants to stop and eat, that is 100% okay. That's why newborn sessions take so long. I am there to work around their schedule, not mine. This entire session revolves around the happiness of your brand new baby (and you, of course!).
AFTER YOUR SESSION:
Thank you for allowing me to snuggle with your sweet newborn baby and capture beautiful images that I will now begin to edit. After about 3-4 weeks, I will share your images with you. Your images will be uploaded to a private online gallery with password protection. No need to stress over which images to choose, you will receive all of the images! They will be delivered via digital download and you will receive a print release.
However, in the event that you'd like me to take care of all the ordering, I am a full service photographer. That means, I am here to help guide you in deciding which images to have printed. We will take time to choose exactly what prints and products you want to purchase to showcase this amazing time in your life. I offer an array of prints of products, including mounted prints, metals, canvas, standout blocks, albums and more. Should you choose you want a album dedicated to your newborn session, I will take the time to create a beautiful custom layout for your album and you will get to approve it before being sent out for printing. Now, you will have beautiful photos to hang on your walls or a timeless album to look back on forever. These images are meant to be displayed and will forever remind you of how tiny your precious baby once was. I cannot think of a more perfect way to treasure your greatest gift of all.
